"The" shows up in more places than you'd think — before superlatives, before rivers and mountain ranges, but never before a single peak or a single country. This chapter maps out the whole territory.
The FIRST SOUND decides — not the first letter.
an hour · a European · an MBA · a united team
Silent h → vowel sound → "an". "Eu-" sounds like "yoo-" → consonant sound → "a". A letter said as a vowel (M = "em") → "an". "U-" sounds like "yoo-" → "a".
"The" appears before superlatives, ordinal numbers, and specific groups of geographic names.

A single mountain peak does NOT take "the": Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga — but a whole RANGE does: the Himalayas.
Single mountains, single countries, continents and cities need no article.
