The real rule is not about the LETTER a word starts with — it is about the SOUND.

Say it out loud first. If the very first SOUND is a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u), use "an". Otherwise use "a" — no matter which letter is written.
"The" points at something SPECIFIC — something both the speaker and listener already know which one it is.

the sun, the moon, the sky, the earth
Rivers, seas, mountain ranges
the Ganga, the Himalayas, the Arabian Sea

the tallest, the best, the fastest

"I saw a dog. The dog was brown."
Sometimes the correct answer is to use NO article — this is the trap most students miss.
No article before: general plural nouns ("Dogs are loyal"), meals ("We had breakfast"), languages ("She speaks French"), sports ("He plays cricket"), and most names of people and countries ("India is my country").
