A, an and the are tiny words called articles that sit before a noun. Words like in, on and under are prepositions — they tell us where something is. Small words, big job!

Use a before a word that starts with a consonant sound. Use an before a word that starts with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

…for something particular that everyone knows which one you mean: "the sun", "the Taj Mahal", or "pass me the book on the table" (a specific book, not any book).
