Scientific Devices in Daily Life 🔬

Almost every "-meter" measures something, and almost every "-scope" lets you see or hear something. Learn those two endings and half this topic is already done.

Part 1 · The "-meters"

Part 2 · The "-scopes"

Part 3 · Everyday Science

1

Devices That Measure 📏

The ending -meter comes from a word meaning "to measure". The first part of the name tells you what it measures — thermo = heat, baro = weight (of air), anemo = wind.

🎯

The pair examiners love: a speedometer shows how fast the vehicle is going right now, while an odometer shows the total distance it has travelled. Both sit on the same dashboard — do not mix them up.

2

Devices That See, Hear & Find 🔭

-scope comes from a word meaning "to look at". These are the instruments that extend our own senses — and several of them are used by the armed forces.

🎖️ Two defence favourites

RADAR 📡

Uses radio waves to find aircraft and ships that are far away, and to measure how far off they are.

SONAR 🌊

Uses sound waves to find objects under water — submarines, shipwrecks and the depth of the sea.

Easy memory hook: radar works in the air, sonar works in the sea (sound travels well in water).

Everyday Science 🏠

These are things in your own home. AISSEE asks why they work, not just what they are called.

💡 A few inventions worth remembering

📞 Telephone — Alexander Graham Bell

💡 Electric bulb — Thomas Alva Edison

📻 Radio — Guglielmo Marconi

✈️ Aeroplane — the Wright brothers

🔭 First to study the sky with a telescope — Galileo

💉 Vaccination (smallpox) — Edward Jenner
