The 4-Step Method 🪜

Most students read the passage three times and still run out of time. Do this instead.

Skim the passage

Read it once, quickly, just to learn what it is about. Do not stop at hard words.

2️⃣

Read the questions

Now you know exactly what to hunt for. This is the step everyone skips.

3️⃣

Scan for the answer

Go back and find the exact line. Underline it. Answers come in passage order.

4️⃣

Check against the passage

Choose what the passage says — never what you personally believe.

⚠️

The biggest mistake: answering from your own general knowledge. If the passage says the tiger sleeps 16 hours, that is the answer — even if you read somewhere else that it sleeps 18. The passage is the boss.

Practice Passage 1 🐘

The Elephant of Kaziranga

Kaziranga National Park lies in the state of Assam, on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra river. It is most famous for the one-horned rhinoceros, but the park is also home to a large family of wild elephants.

An adult elephant eats for nearly sixteen hours a day and can finish almost 150 kilograms of grass, leaves and bark. Because it eats so much, a herd must keep moving in search of fresh food. The oldest female, called the matriarch, leads the herd. She remembers the paths to water even during a long dry season, and the younger elephants follow her without question.

Elephants are gentle animals, but they become dangerous when they are frightened. Every year a few herds wander into nearby villages, attracted by the smell of ripe paddy. The forest guards then guide them back with drums and torches, taking care never to harm them.

Kaziranga was declared a World Heritage Site because of this rich wildlife. Today, hundreds of visitors come every winter, hoping to see a herd crossing the tall elephant grass at dawn.

The Boy Who Wanted to Fly

Arjun lived in a small village in the hills of Himachal. Every afternoon, when the air force jets from a distant base roared across the sky, he would drop whatever he was doing and run to the open field behind his house to watch them disappear beyond the ridge.

"You will hurt your neck," his grandmother would laugh. But Arjun did not mind. He had decided, at the age of nine, that one day he would sit inside one of those aircraft.

His school had no library and only one English teacher, so Arjun borrowed old magazines from the post office and read them by lamplight. He was not the cleverest boy in his class, yet he was certainly the most stubborn. When he failed a mathematics test in Class 5, he did not cry. He simply woke up an hour earlier every morning and solved sums until the answers stopped frightening him.

Three years later Arjun was selected for a military school. On the day he left, his grandmother pressed a small packet of sweets into his hand and said nothing at all. She did not need to. Both of them were looking at the sky.
